I absolutely love it when a band surprises the hell out of me and releases a disc that kicks the ass of their previous material. With their previous two releases, CARCARIASS was a band that I thought I should like, but their music just did not grab me enough (except for the killer two opening tracks on their debut, Hell on Earth). Their songs were neither complex nor catchy enough to sustain my interest. However, all this has changed with the release of Killing Process. CARCARIASS have realized their potential and then some.
This CD contains excellent melodies, tons of catchy riffage, well done and ever-present leads, and some varied and cool drumming. It is definitely not Technical Death Metal, but there are some glimpses of Progressive Death/Thrash. Mostly though, Killing Process is just a wonderfully engaging collection of music that happens to be more complex than the average band's material.
One unique aspect of this disc is that, of the nine songs on display, four are instrumentals, and another song contains only one relatively short section with vocals. All of these tracks are quite interesting, which is a difficult feat in my book since I normally prefer songs with vocals. Most of the instrumentals sound somewhat like a more melodic and thrashier version of latter day DEATH. However, the almost all instrumental track "Under Concrete" has a FATES WARNING - Parallels vibe (albeit with more lead guitar) to start and close the song.
My two favorite songs on Killing Process are tracks 1 ("Watery Grave") and 6 ("Winds of Death"). Both contain incredibly infectious, killer riffage and wonderful melodies. The guitar playing is the highlight of this disc, and the fluid, yet chunky, and always extremely catchy licks never seem to end on these two songs especially. The riffs in the last 1.5 minutes of "Watery Grave" and the beginning passages of "Winds of Death" remind me very much of a hybrid of the guitarwork on CORONER's No More Color and Mental Vortex. Very high praise indeed.
The catchiness and stellar musicianship on Killing Process rival DECAPITATED's excellent work on Nihility. These are the two Death Metal discs that I keep coming back to in 2002, and I imagine that they will both place highly in my list of favorites for the year. If you have not heard the Killing Process material, you really must check CARCARIASS out at as soon as possible.

Carcariass 3rd album of excellent technical (death) metal. Influences come from Death (post-Human) and bands like Rush. In contrast to their earlier releases, there are a lot less vocals on this album. Only in "Watery grave", "Tragical end", "Mortal climb", "Winds of death" and "Under concrete" some grunts come along but even these songs have a tendency of being instrumental. So there are many instrumental parts as various instrumental songs on this release. Does this disturb the listening experience in any way? No! The technical (death) metal is being play excellent and comes with a clear yet heavy production, giving you the possibility to hear all the stuff that these excellent musicians do with their instruments. And despite the high level of technicality you never get the idea that they're just showing off. Which is also caused by the fact that the songs are full of rhythm changes and have a decent song structure. Furthermore, occasional fast parts are added to remind us that this band originates from the death metal scene. But because of the use of killer melodies (reminiscent of a mixture between Death and Iced Earth) and the reduced use of grunt vocals makes this album recommendable for every metal freak who likes his shit technical yet heavy. Some songs to check out are "Tragical end", "Mortal climb", "Burn in peace" and "Under concrete". Get this album!

Chronicles of chaos
How someone can actually choose to keep a name such as Carcariass when a certain band with a similar name is such a legend in the metal world is beyond me, but in any case the third album by this French band is worth looking into. There is some rather technical melodic death metal going on here, with four out of the nine tracks on offer remaining instrumental. The album opens with a solo bass line, and soon enough the first Death-like dissonant riff with an odd time signature comes along, as does the first guitar solo. Even though there is a lot of emphasis on the technical side of things, the music still remains listenable -- not exactly a barrel of metallic fun or an onslaught of raw energy, but still enjoyable in its own way. The production is clear and gives every instrument some room. While not exactly brimming with intensity and nowhere near an album like Death's _The Sound of Perseverance_, _Killing Process_ is still a commendable effort that should be of interest for fans of technical death metal.

Quel splendide 3ème album de ces deathsters Français! Sorti chez Adipocere, cet opus nous offre encore une fois un magnifique death technique, brutal et mélodique à la fois dans la lignée du grand DEATH ! La basse roule à la perfection, les grattes sont précises, concises et redoutables, la batterie est impeccable et puissante. Le tout est servi par une énorme production (enregistré chez S. Buriez quand même !) et une mise en place excellent, " killing process " ne peut que rallier les suffrages du public pour ce groupe persistant et méritoire ! Supportez ces tueurs !

Überaus melodischen und spielerisch wirklich hochpräzisen Death Metal, welcher seinen großen Reiz aus stilistisch hervorragend verarbeiteten Thrash-Wurzeln bezieht, spielen diese drei stahlbegeisterten Franzosenfanatiker. Massiv funkensprühende Notenkunst entfacht hier so einiges. „Killing Process”, ihr bereits drittes Albumfeuer, lodert daher kilometerhoch züngelnd in den schwarzen Nachthimmel empor und erhellt diesen weitläufig. Aus dem entstandenen Feuer wird dann sogar ein regelrechtes Feuerwerk an explodierenden Gitarrenläufen, welche donnernd die Szenerie erhallen. Der bemerkenswert superbe Schlagwerker der Band, Bertrand Simonin, steht dem Carcariass-Saitenartisten Pascal Lanquetin keinen Deut nach – dieser Drummer gerbt die Felle mit sprichwörtlicher rhythmischer Schlagbesessenheit, was in unzähligen atemberaubenden Tempowechseln und einer erdrückenden Vielzahl an dauernd unerwarteten Breaks mündet. Stellenweise, wenn das doch recht progressiv ausgearbeitete Songmaterial dieser tollen Band die für viele vergleichbare Truppen scheinbar undurchdringlichen Grenzen der Spielfreude zu durchbrechen scheint, offenbart sich die ganze Edelklasse von Carcariass. Die landestypisch inszenierte, filigrane Spieltechnik des Trios ist überragend, die komplex verschachtelten Melodien der Songs nicht so schnell ins Ohr gehend und die Produktion von „Killing Process” sehr kraftvoll; enorm relevante Inhaltsmerkmale in gerade dieser Stilistik, denen man hier gern seine Aufmerksamkeit leiht. Diese mörderisch gute Scheibe knallt und fetzt bei entsprechender (hoher) Spiellautstärke mit einer ausgesprochenen Wucht aus den Boxen, was einigen und vor allem dauerhaften Hörgenuss bieten kann. Der griffige Albumtitel „Killing Process” ist hier auch sehr gut gewählt, denn der unaufhaltbare Tötungsprozess deiner nervenden Hörlangeweile hat mit dem dringlich empfehlenswerten Erwerb dieser ausnahmslos naturgeilen Silberplatte schon begonnen.

Ne vous y fiez pas, le contenu de "Killing Process" est de bien meilleure qualité que sa pochette. La technique est toujours de rigueur mais plutot que de desservir les titres, elle leur rend bien service grace à des riffs efficaces et des structures sensées. Les vocaux entre le chant death-mélodique suédois et Loudblast, sont réduits au minimum et laissent place à une instrumentation riche. Musicalement, c'est plutot heavy avec des envolées thrash et de temps à autres des passages plus death. On pourrait synthétiser les influences autour de formations death technique (Death, Cynic, Coroner...), mélodique (In Flames, Dark Tranquillity...) et heavy prog de la trempe de Symphnoy-X ou Dream Theater. Le jeu de gratte très en avant peut rappeller Chuck Schuldiner (Death) pour les riffs complexes et certains solos, parfois Tommy T. Baron (Coroner) pour le tapping virulent. Au meme titre la section rythmique peut rappeller la paire Di Giorgio/Hoglan, le touché du bassiste et quelques breaks complexes. Malgré des qualités présentes chez les trois membres, on peut reprocher une surexposition de la guitare et un étalage parfois trop démonstratif. Meme si le bassiste et le batteur ne sont pas des rigolos, on a vraiment le sentiment que Pascal, le guitariste compose tout et que les autres n'ont une semi-liberté, n'exploitant pas autant leur potentiel. Quelques passages sonnent terriblement mous, comme sur "Killing Process" par exemple, qui peine à décoller. Cela dit, l'écriture est riche et l'exécution, très bonne. Les guitaristes devraient apprécier, les autres pourraient trouver cet album de death justement pas assez death. En tout cas, on ne pourra qu'applaudir le chemin parcouru depuis les débuts de Carcariass.

Incredibile sorpresa questi Carcariass…L’artwork non troppo bello ed un po’scontato, infatti, assieme al nome che ricorda troppo quello di una grande band (fate voi i conti), mi avevano indotto a pensare ad un gruppo senza troppa fantasia, di poco valore dunque. Ebbene niente di più errato: i Carcariass sono una formazione originale, dotatissima tecnicamente, che ha saputo dar vita ad un death metal imprevedibile, potente e molto complesso, dimostrando di aver appreso benissimo la lezione di realtà affermate, ma mettendo davanti a tutto le proprie idee musicali. Ed è così che ci troviamo ad ascoltare riff contorti e ritmati in stile “Death” (la band di Chuck Schuldiner), arricchiti da passaggi molto melodici e da una serie notevole di evoluzioni che sanno di progressive metal. La voce varia da timbri più bassi ed oscuri in stile growl a parti strillate decisamente più chiare, ma è proprio in questo ambito che arriva la più grossa particolarità: la maggior parte dell’opera è strumental.! Vi assicuro tra l’altro che le nove composizioni non stufano l’ascoltatore bensì lo conquistano grazie a cavalcate distorte e grazie alle ottime linee melodiche create dalle sei corde. A tratti alcune soluzioni, quali, ad esempio, il pezzo di basso iniziale con il quale si apre il disco, risultano un po’ “grezze” o meglio poco raffinate, ma sono pochi secondi all’interno di tanti minuti di efficacissimo death metal. Siamo quindi davanti ad una release imperdibile, di quelle che mi sento veramente di consigliare. Complimenti a questa giovane band francese.

Carcariass (ou « Le Grand Requin Blanc » en latin) emporte nos tympans dans les profondeurs de son univers. Le groupe originaire de Besançon a su nous concocter un juteux mélange de sonorités a la fois mélodiques et aériennes avec une base de death donnant à l’album une stabilité et une crédibilité indéniable.
Aucune note n’est laissée au hasard. Les riffs de guitares accrocheurs et les solo totalement renversants de par leur beauté forment une mélopée envoûtante qui berce vos sens au rythme d’une double pédale percutante et d’un charley tintant.
La basse occupe une place a part entière et sort du contexte habituel de nappe ambiante. Elle possède là un véritable rôle mélodique qui enrichie les sets. Les parties taping sont impressionnantes et rendent les morceaux encore plus efficaces.
Les rythmiques entraînantes de la batterie son parfaitement cadrés dans l’univers du groupe. Une caisse claire particulièrement claquante et sèche ainsi qu’un jeu de jambe rapide et efficace rendent le tout parfaitement homogène.
Le chant n’est que ponctuel et n’apparaît pas dans tout les morceaux. En effet, sur neuf morceaux, quatre sont uniquement instrumentaux, laissant ainsi une place confortable pour les accords harmonieux et énergiques des guitares.
La production fait tout a fait honneur au groupe qui remporte haut la main le prix de l’originalité donnant une bouffé d’air frais à la scène hexagonale, notamment grâce au mélange de sons vintages très élancés. Les guitares ont une satu des plus propres, la basse est très bien mise en avant grace à un très bon mix et la batterie est doté de sons claquants et énergiques.
Le résultat : un 3eme album magistral qui propulse le groupe français à un niveau rarement atteint dans l’hexagone concurrençant sans mal avec les géants suédois.

You can instantly tell that France's 3 piece Carcariass really like their Cynic, Coroner and newer Death CDs and it's a beautiful thing. The guitar work on "Killing Process" is very sharp with arpeggios that sweep in and out of interesting shifts in time signature. Even the guitar synth points to Cynic, but there is no denying a sense of self brewing in Carcariass' music. As "Killing Process" forges on, the fret board work becomes more and more impressive. No matter how complex the rhythms get, this band digs in with a busy, though always sensible direction in their playing. Like Cynic, Death and Atheist, who all impressed with their dexterity, but created some memorable melodies within their riff storms, Carcariass have also achieved this perfect balance. The drummers skills are the weakest link and perhaps too simplistic as he holds down the timing with incessant double bass work for the bass and guitar players to leap off into any direction. I found myself missing more complex cymbal fills, or tension releasing tom rolls as the album played out. Certainly this is a small complaint up against a mighty release of finesse and creativity. Add a solid, mid-ranged snarl/rasp that is used sparingly due to the instrumental nature of this album and you will experience why Carcariass is one of Europe's best kept secrets. "Killing Process" is an impressive achievement

Jau, datt is ja mal ne Überraschung! Metal aus Frankreich! Beschränkte sich mein Wissen um französische Metalbands bisher auf Misanthrope, so muß ich jetzt erfahren, daß es dort doch noch ein paar Bands mehr gibt. Allen voran Carcariass, die mich mit ihrem dritten Album schlichtweg vom Hocker hauen! Das Trio wurzelt eindeutig im Deathmetal, schmettert auf diesem Silberling allerdings derart mit geilen Riffs, noch geileren Licks und einer schier unerschöpflichen Menge an geilsten Melodien um sich, daß jegliche Stilbezeichnung einer untragbaren Einschränkung gleichkäme. Zudem ist mir derzeit keine andere Band bekannt, die in diesem Bereich sonderlich überzeugend ist. Arch Enemy vielleicht, frühe InFlames unter Umständen, Carcariass läßt diese großen Namen meiner Meinung nach aber weit hinter sich zurück!
Das Album beginnt mit einem interessanten Baßriff, das von vorneherein klar macht, daß etwas metaluntypisch auch der Bassist mitmischen will. Im Folgenden hört man zweistimmige Gitarrenläufe, komplexes und zu jeder Zeit stimmiges Drumming, perfekt aufeinander abgestimmte Instrumentierung. Erst dudelt es hier, dann kommt dort eine interessante Idee zum Vorschein bevor die Band beschließt, es wieder ordentlich krachen zu lassen und die bewundernde Schar bangen zu sehen. Ganz sicher einer der Scheiben, die auch beim hundertsten Durchhören noch Überraschungen und ungeahnte Details bereithält. Hundertmal hab ich sie zwar noch nicht gehört, die Grenze is aber in nicht allzuferner Zeit erreicht. Irgendeinen Song unter den neunen, der etwas unter dem allgemeinen Niveau liegt, konnte ich jedoch bisher noch nicht ausmachen. Apropos neun: von den neun Songs sind 4 zur Gänze instrumental gehalten, und beim Rest hält sich der Gesang auch in sehr engen Grenzen. In diesem Trio teilen sich der Gitarrist und der Bassist den Gesang, und sind wohl der Meinung, daß man diesen vernachlässigen darf, um sich stattdessen auf die Instrumente zu konzentrieren. Und: Recht haben sie! Gesang braucht diese Scheibe gar nicht erst. Bin begeistert!
Was Carcariass nun bräuchte, wäre etwas Aufmerksamkeit außerhalb Frankreichs, eine vernünftige EuropaTour und ein bißchen Glück. Wenn Adipocere das nicht allzu doof anstellen, bin ich sicher, haben sie mit dieser Band bald ihr größtes Pferd im Stall. Ich bin jedenfalls gespannt, was da noch kommt...

Carcariass är ett franskt death metal band som bildades så tidigt som 1991. Dom har hunnit släppa två skivor innan denna som jag tyvärr inte hört men efter att ha hört denna vill jag mer än gärna lägga vantarna på dom skivorna också. Det man bjuds på är teknisk dödsmetall av högsta kvalité. Det som gör skivan så speciell och otroligt bra är dom utomordentliga och tekniska riff som bygger upp hela låtens struktur. Skivan innehåller nio låtar och totallängden blir cirka 45 minuter.
Av dom nio låtar skivan består av är fyra helt intrumentaliska och även om jag inte tycker allt för mycket om instrumentaliska låtar så håller dom flesta av dom riktigt hög klass och man tröttnar inte på dom i första taget. Musiken är också väldigt melodiös vilket passar mig perfekt i smaken. Det som håller mitt intresse uppe genom hela skivan är att låtarna är så variationsrika och väldigt genomtänkta.
Carcariass är ett bevis på att det fortfarande finns mängder av okända dödsmetall band som håller högre standard än dom riktigt stora och kända banden. Detta är ett band som förtjänar tio gånger mer uppmärksamhet än vad dom får i dagsläget.

"Killing process" ist im letzten Jahr quasi das Album zum 10-jährigen Bestehen von Carcariass gewesen. Rauher Death Metal, der sowohl mit Thrash Elementen als auch Melodien angereichert wurde, wird uns geboten. Erstaunlich, dass 4 der 9 Songs ohne Gesang auskommen. Besonders der Titeltrack weiss dabei zu überzeugen. Tolle Meldodien und doch kraftvoll, auch ohne growlende Vocals. So findet man auf diesem Werk die ein oder andere gute Passage, die einem zum wiederholten Hören der Scheibe auffordern. Zwar werde ich nicht mit allen Songs richtig grün, aber Carcariass sind doch für die ein oder andere Überraschung gut, sowohl auf ihrem Album als auch bestimmt für die Zukunft.

Les français de Carcariass viennent de nous pondre un nouvel album. Pour vos donner une idée, ils jouent un death-metal technique et mélodique, où l'on ressent des influences de Death et des sonorités à la Loudblast. D'ailleurs, la production a été confiée à Stéphane Buriez et François Jamin... de Loudblast, justement ! Et leur travail met particulièrement bien en valeur les guitares et leurs harmonies. On sent qu'il y a une réelle maîtrise, et chacun des instruments est parfaitement bien utilisé. Les compositions sont vraiment réussies et l'on ne compte plus les riffs accrocheurs, les rythmiques claquantes et les mélodies subtiles. Un vrai bonheur. Malgré le niveau technique, tout reste très abordable même dès la 1ère écoute. Et la richesse de cet album fait que l'on ne s'ennuie jamais même après plusieurs écoutes. Une grand réussite. Achetez utile, achetez français, achetez "Killing Process" de Carcariass !!

Twilight cd
Auf ihrem mittlerweile dritten Album widmen sich diese Franzosen sehr verstärkt dem progressiven und technischen Death Metal. Auch wenn sie die Brillanz eines Chuck Schuldiner (R.I.P.) und seinen ehemaligen Bandkollegen von Death nicht erreichen, wissen Carcariass durch ihre viele geilen Gitarren- und Basssoli oft an sie zu erinnern. Der Opener „Watery Grave“ alleine ist schon mal ziemlich fett und professionell. Aber auch die restlichen Songs, hier sei „Lost In Agony“ hervorgehoben, stehen dem nur geringfügig nach. Wer es gerne frickelig, aber dennoch überschaubar und melodiös mag, ist bei diesem Album unter Garantie gut aufgehoben. Erwähnt sei noch, dass vier der insgesamt neun Stücke rein instrumental daherkommen, auch wenn man bis auf den 1 Minuten Track nicht auf Gesang verzichten hätte müssen, wie ich finde. Schließlich macht der Frontmann auch stimmlich eine ganze gute Figur mit seinen angenehmen Death Growls. Schlussendlich ist „Killing Process“ ein sehr ordentliches Album geworden, das jedem Fan technischer Fertigkeiten und progressivem Death Metals ans Herz gelegt sei.

Carcariass est l’exemple même du groupe à qui je ne puis objectivement rien reprocher, mais auquel il manque un je-ne-sais-quoi pour en faire une bombe, peut-être un grain de folie ? C’est encore le cas pour ce troisième album, incontestablement le meilleur de leur discographie. Ces gars-là sont très doués, leur métal est un death/thrash axé sur la technique plutôt que sur la sauvagerie, un déluge de guitares plein de rebondissements, qui recèle jusqu’à trois lignes de guitares formant d’inextricables entrelacs. Les guitaristes apprécieront, mais les fans « simples », càd non-musiciens, dont je suis, auront du mal à trouver leur bonheur dans cette débauche d’effets, car une seconde d’inattention peut vous faire perdre le fil conducteur du morceau, et alors vous êtes irrémédiablement perdu ; après quelques titres, cet album a tendance à me saouler, comme une personne qui parlerait sans arrêt de tout et n’importe quoi. Vous voilà prévenu, donc écoutez-le avant de l’acheter... J’ajouterai que les vocaux sont bien death, mais certains titres en sont simplement dépourvus. Encore un bon groupe issu de la dynamique scène française, qui a maintenant un représentant prometteur dans le death technique...

Though not the most well-known French death metal band, Carcariass is one of the elders of the scene, formed back in 1991, though it wasn't until 1997 that their first album was released. Their most recent album, 2002's Killing Process, shows the band maturing quite nicely from their early days. Killing Process is clearly a technical death metal album, but with a degree of melody and catchiness not often associated with the genre, and the guitars have a nice steely edge that brings out the best in the songs. There is the occasional Cynic-style jazz element, though it's not as obvious or pervasive as other bands in this field. A fine album from a band that still may be on the rise.

Eine grosse Überraschung trudelte mir hier ins Haus, nämlich die neue und dritte Scheibe der französischen Carcariass. Sie bewiesen schon auf dem letzen Longplayer "Sideral torment", dass sie es verstehen, Virtuosität, Progressivität, Melodie und Death/Thrash Metal zu verbinden. Auf "Killing process" nehmen die Prog- und Melodic Elemente klar den grösseren Stellenwert ein. Grossartige Melodiebögen, knackige Mid-Tempo Gitarrenriffs, kleine und kurze Gitarrenfrickeleien und getappte Lead-Parts durchziehen den Silberling und lassen keine Langeweile aufkommen. Die Musik der drei Franzosen konzentriert sich vor allem auf die Instrumente, darum sind auch vier der neuen Stücke reine Instrumental-Songs. Jedoch sind die Vocals auch in den anderen Songs nicht sehr dicht gesät, obwohl sie sehr gut sind. Das Drumming ist sehr rhythmisch und trotzdem schlicht gehalten, im Vordergrund steht klar die exzellente Gitarrenarbeit und das nicht zu verachtende Bassspiel. Der superbe Sound kann sich hören lassen und überzeugt durch satte Gitarren und den gut hörbaren Bass. Teilweise verliert sich die CD ein bisschen im Melodienspiel, da würde der eine oder andere zusätzliche Mosh-Part weit effektiver sein. Durch die anspruchsvolle Musik wird ein mehrmaliges Durchhören der Scheibe Pflicht, jedoch offenbart sich einen dann eine grossartige Scheibe, die einen grossen Wiedererkennungswert besitzt!

These guys hail from France & play some really good & technical sounding Death Metal music. Their music has a very cool old school styled Death Metal sound with touches of new school tossed in. They do mix in lots of elements of Thrash Metal that really comes out in the guitar work. There is a very traditional Metal sound that shines through in their music as well! The vocals are done in a very mid ranged old school Death Metal growls! I liked these guys a lot cause they added in lots of atmosphere & major creativity with in their heavy brutalness! This is one for every fan of Death Metal music!!!

Carcariass, nouveau venu chez Adipocère… n'est pas pour nous une révélation, mais une confirmation, un retour en fanfare… Groupe de Death Trash Français datant des débuts 90, leur présentation n'est plus à faire… Ce Cd " Killing Proccess " semble pour eux un véritable accomplissement… ou plutôt un nouveau départ. 9 titres dans la lignée des anciennes productions avec un petit quelque chose 2001, une nouvelle orientation encore plus mélodique, technique et accessible à la fois ; cet opus relève incontestablement d'une ingéniosité et une esprit créatif débordant… Vous ballottant d'écume en écume, de riffs en riffs, d'ambiances en mélodies… Une véritable claque iodée, et frétillante. Un petit bijoux que vous auriez tout de même du mal à accrocher à votre collier… Superbe artwork !

Wer hätte gedacht, daß aus unserem westlichen Nachbarland neben den ganzen Präservativen und Baguettes auch immer mehr innovative und einzigartige Metalbands hervorkriechen? Nun, die neueste dieser Bands (NO RETURN, HIMINBJORG, S.U.P., CARNIVAL IN COAL,...) ist das vorliegende Trio aus Besançon. 'Killing Process' ist dabei bereits das dritte Album von CARCARIASS (eine CD in Eigenregie und eine 1998 beim Schweizer Label Impact veröffentlicht) und beweist eindrucksvoll, daß nicht nur die Polen und die Schweden es fertig bringen hochtechnischen, progressiven Death Metal in Europa zu fabrizieren. So verbinden die Franzosen bei ihren 9 hochkarätigen und begeisternden Songs Elemente von Bands wie CORONER, ATHEIST, PESTILENCE oder DEATH mit powervollen Heavy-Riffs der Marke TITAN FORCE / IRON MAIDEN zu einer Melange, die man getrost als genial bezeichnen kann. Vorzüglich produziert weist schon der einleitende Basslauf darauf hin, was eine Dreiviertelstunde folgt. Wahnwitzige Breaks, Rhythmusspielereien, Stakkato-Anfälle, ein durchgehend hervorragendes Gespür für notwendige Melodien und sensationelle Leads (meist getappt) werden von den Froschfressern derart leichtfüßig verbunden und zu einem logischen und nie wirren oder undurchsichtigen Killeralbum vereint, daß ich nur allen Fans der genannten Bands schleunigst empfehlen kann, mal eine Mail nach Franzia zu schicken, um sich zu informieren, wer die Scheibe in Dschörmanie vertreibt: adipocere@wanadoo.fr. Hört euch nur mal den überragenden TITAN FORCE - on - Prog-Death - Opener 'Watery Grave', die drei unglaublich genialen Instrumentals, den schnelleren Rhythmushammer 'Mortal Climb' mit seinen unwiderstehlichen PESTILENCE-like Melodic-Leads oder das durch grandioses Lead-Tapping bestimmte 'Under Concrete' an, und ihr werdet meine überschwengliche Begeisterung sofort verstehen. This band already featured in the first edition of our zine with their debut album “Hell on earth” and Ricardo did an interview. Well, what can I say about this one. Actually it’s the logical follow-up to their debut. Really great technical death metal with lots of melody and a ultralow grunt. They’ve integrated more variation in their songs so these won’t bore you with their long duration. My favourite songs are “Indians eviction”, “Void attraction (instr.)” and “Led by ignorance”. If you want a great death metal band but with a own style/twist then Carcariass is the one!

Es soll noch immer Leute geben, die glauben, was Skandinavien für Black Metal, seien die Staaten für Death Metal. Doch weit gefehlt ! Die neue Death Metal Hoffnung kommt nicht etwa aus Übersee oder Großbritannien, sondern aus dem Land des Baguettes und heißt Carcariass. Nunja, so neu ist diese Formation nun auch nicht mehr, gründete man sich doch bereits 1991 und hat mit Hell on Earth sechs Jahre später das Debüt Album veröffentlicht, welches bei uns leider total unterging. Bei Sideral Torment sieht es nun schon wieder so aus, als würde die Band nicht die Beachtung finden, die ihr eigentlich gebührt. Denn der zweite Longplayer erschien bereits Ende 1998 über das Schweizer Label Impacts Records und wurde in ihrem Heimatland, sowie der Schweiz und Belgien im Gegensatz zu uns zu recht von der Presse allseits gelobt. Carcariass spielen melodischen, technischen, mid-tempo Death Metal mit einer eigenen Note und einer riesigen Portion Freude an der Musik. Die Leadgitarre klingt oft sehr verträumt und rutscht auch teilweise mal in die Power/ True Metal-Ecke ab, soll heißen eher weich und melodisch als ein dahingerotztes Solo, das man halt spielt, um auf Teufel komm raus ein Solo einzubauen. Insgesamt gesehen bietet Sideral Torment geradlinigen Death Metal, verpackt in einer akzeptablen Aufmachung und einem zufriedenstellenden Soundgewand, sowie einer Spielzeit, die den Namen Longplayer auch wirklich verdient. Ich bin mir sicher, daß die drei Franzosen auch bei uns sehr gut ankommen würden, wenn sie nur einmal die Möglichkeit bekämen sich einem größeren Publikum vorzustellen. Nach einigen Pleiten, die mich schon beinahe haben verzweifeln lassen kann ich also drei Kreuze machen und erleichtert verkünden: Es gibt ihn doch noch, den guten alten Death Metal. Hut ab vor Carcariass !

Carcariass is een Franse Death Metal band die nu met zijn derde album komt. Toen ik de cd in mijn cd speler deed schatte ik de band nog in als een brute, technische band, maar van dit idee werd ik snel afgeholpen. Carcariass omvat namelijk een zeer melodieuze, aangename sound, die weliswaar zijn roots heeft in de Death Metal, maar als het er op aan komt meer de nadruk legt op herkenbaar gitaarwerk en progmetal-achtige structuren dan op zware riffs en diepe grunts.
Over grunts gesproken: bassist Raphael Couturier is de man die de demonenstem verzorgt, maar die hoor je erg weinig. Van de negen tracks op "Killing Process" zijn er namelijk vier volledig instrumentaal en kennen de overige nummers eveneens lange instrumentale passages. Het is door middel van die stukken dat de band zich op zijn best toont; net als op goede progmetal albums staan de nummers bol van het technische gitaarwerk en intrigerende ritmische afwisselingen. Tijdens het luisteren naar dit album bedacht ik me herhaaldelijk dat dit ongeveer moet zijn hoe Dream Theater had geklonken als het een Death Metal band was geweest. Met nadruk op 'ongeveer', want met deze vergelijking zet ik Carcariass op een te hoog voetstuk.
Om je wat te helpen deze band binnen het Death Metal genre te plaatsen, vergelijk ik Carcariass met de latere Death en zou je deze muziek gerust kunnen omschrijven als progressieve, melodieuze Death Metal.
Om nou alle nummers afzonderlijk te behandelen lijkt me een beetje onzinnig. De composities zijn min of meer aaneenschakelingen van aparte stukken, met weinig samenhang. Deze eigenschap is echter niet hinderlijk, want het zijn goed lopende nummers die structureel gezien enigszins aan die van het geweldige Opeth album "Morningrise" doen denken.
Over de productie ben ik erg te spreken. "Killing Process" heeft een heerlijk heldere sound en alle instrumenten komen door de vlekkenloze mix uitstekend tot hun recht. Afgezien van de zware bassdrums en het af en toe opduikende Göteborg-gitaarwerk ontstijgt Carcariass tijdens de instrumentale passages het Death Metal genre en maakt de band met deze release zeker kans om ook metal-liefhebbers buiten dit genre aan te spreken.
Daarom luidt mijn eindoordeel: "Killing Process" is het overwegen waard voor allen die van melodieuze, technische metal houden en een vleugje Death Metal wel kunnen waarderen.

I’ve always said that the French scene is generally underrated, although they do have some really great bands. They have few of them yes, but usually what you get from there is like major good, like French Cognac or Red Wine. Like Les Garcons Bouchers or Pigale, or Massacra. You might dislike it, but you have to admit the quality. This is the case by the way. I didn’t really like this record, but that’s me - I don’t like progressive, still at the same time I can’t deny the superior quality of this record, especially given the fact that the band is a three-piece. Unfuckingblievably professional although not exactly original. OK, off with emotions and impressions, back in the gig - music: progressive death metal, with the solos that are so exaggerated and long that at certain points you really stop taking them seriously, more than commendable work on the drum rhythm breaks and extremely powerful bass, but the bad thing about it is - it lacks the drive. Well, this is not the first time we turn to the example of Death’s «Sound of Perseverance» but, hell, it is just the most graphic as far as the genre goes - anyhows, but quo vicit Jovi, non vicit bovi, there should be more drive and guts to it. Still, I’d recommend paying attention to the band, especially if you are into technical stuff.

This French death metal band is together since 1991. After a demo tape ('94) they recorded a self-financed CD in 1997. They got raving reviews in international fanzines and magazines and got picked up by the new Swiss label Impact Records. This second CD was recorded in September 1998 in the Impuls Studios in Belgium and produced by Stephan Kraemer and Martin Lonicer. Carcariass plays brutal, melodic death metal. What stands out most on this release are the very melodic and guitar solos who make sound Carcariass original and fresh. Vocals are of course guttural. This trio is giving a new twist to death metal so if you are a fan of this style of music than contact them

Chronicle of chaos
With enough speed and death metal anger to keep things interesting for the most part, French act Carcariass aim to please with their technical angle on metal music. Slick guitar work helps muster their generic, yet brutal death metal sound. Along the lines of a more rhythmic Cannibal Corpse or Internal Bleeding, Carcariass need a bit more work before their metal approach is well rewarded. Points go out to the truly sincere technical approach of guitarist Pascal Lanquetin. We're talking John Petrucci (Dream Theater) playing death metal here. Certain songs work, allowing for a pleasurable listen, but in the end a bit more consistency is needed to make this band stand out above the rest of today's growing metal scene. Salut, Carcariass! Welcome to the metal ranks.

Death metal! I really don’t have much to say about this one. The guitars are pretty cool (if a little cheesy), but for the most part it’s paint-by-numbers death. The vocals are (get this) low and growling. The musicianship is tight, the songs are formulaic, and the whole thing is loud. If you’ve heard one you’ve heard ‘em all. Death metal fans might like it, and the band does deserve some credit for the song title "Extreme Flatulence." Don’t ask me what the song’s about though, ‘cos I can’t understand a word of it.

Metal Storm
This French band really knows the shit, Technical Death Metal with some Thrash Metal Riffs and solos, Incredible songs (except for the 5th track “Children Slave” the only dry song in Hell On Earth) This debut really demonstrates how good this band is, and how good they will be (I am looking forward to get “Sideral Torment” and “Killing Process”).
Anyway now for the album, Hell On Earth is an album with a lot of inventive, and most of all brilliant music, the first two tracks “Hell On Earth” and “To Be With You…In Your Grave” are attached, Hell On Earth is like a overture for the entire album, this first two songs are by far the best tracks in this album, Brutal Catchy riffs (not good solos, but !hey¡ at least they try…), The bass-lines are infamous (you should hear the cleanliness of that bass man so you could understand) and the drums, Oh My God the drums, that irregular tempo obligates the other instruments to go from Ultra fast, to measured, then ultra super fast, to just fast, and then slow and so on, this is one of the most genius things I’ve heard in this particular genre.
Which gets me to the next point, the production, let me tell you, to be an independent band with this sound, is a huge achievement(now they are with Adipocere records), is like being a boozehound but with a lot of babes and hot models, Carcariass polished their sound incredibly well, most independent bands from this time would like to have “Hell On Earth” sound, and dudes believe me this album was recorded in 1997 so I am telling you, this album sounds clean, very clean,
The songs are 5 to 6 minutes long, 5 minutes of pure exorbitant music, let’s take the song “Brain Dead” for example, this song starts with a very catchy riff, the insane double-bass starts, the crazy bass-lines begin hammering your ears like a drill, so the song initiates, then when you think “…o man this is the most brutal song I’ve heard…” the song starts to get unhurried, everything is calm (except for the vocals that are always angry like a rabid dog) and then when you think you’re safe, again the drilling, violent music attacks with no advice, you start to head bang like a total freak, and that’s how the song ends, drilling your fucking brains out.
This band is unfortunately not well recognized or known in the metal scene, but they have a lot to give, a lot to present, music far beyond our awareness, Extreme music with some incredible things all over, (mostly thrash elements, hear the “hopeless” solo, or the riff in “Post Combustion” and you’ll see what am I talking about) a great band with incredible concept, ok “Extreme Flatulence” is not a great concept, I admit a song about farts is just funny, not conceptual, but that’s exactly the greatest thing, Carcariass is versatile, flexible in their music, one of the best bands in the extreme brutal scene for sure.
